Online Backup

This chapter complements your complete backup strategy by helping you perform a backup of your online Lotus Server. BRMS is an IBM IBM i licensed program product (LPP) designed to help you backup and recover your data as well as track and protect the media used.

Quickplace and Domino for IBM i allow the configuration of a basic set of defaults for use with BRMS that provide an easy to use interface for backing up your Lotus Server while it is online. Backing up your Lotus Server should not replace your occasional complete system backups. To do a complete system backup through BRMS, see the BRMS manual, chapter 3.

To perform an online Lotus Server backup, you should understand the following concepts:

BRMS Concepts

Media: a tape cartridge which will hold the saved data.

Media Identifier: a name given to a physical piece of media.

Media Class: a logical grouping of media with similar physical and/or logical characteristics (eg. density, etc.)

Control Group: a grouping of items (eg. libraries, stream files, etc.) to back up and attributes associated with how to back them up.

Policies: a set of defaults that are commonly used (ie. device, media class, etc.). Generally used defaults are in the BRMS system policy. Backup related defaults are in the BRMS backup policy.

Media Class: a logical grouping of media with similar physical and/or logical characteristics (eg. density, etc.)
