Automatically Duplicating Media after BRMS Backup has Completed
Media policies can be set up to automatically run the Duplicate Media using BRM (DUPMEDBRM
) command. After a backup done with Start Backup using BRM (STRBKUBRM
) command completes, BRMS will automatically submit the DUPMEDBRM
command to batch to duplicate the save media from that backup.
To enable automatic duplication, do the following:
1. To indicate how to process the automatic duplication, run the Work Policy using BRM (WRKPCYBRM
) command with *MED specified for the Policy type (TYPE) parameter and then take option 2 to change the following fields:

2. To indicate how the DUPMEDBRM
command(s) should be submitted to batch, run the Work Policy using BRM (WRKPCYBRM
) command with *SYS specified for the Policy type (TYPE) parameter and then take option 1 to change the following fields:

NOTES:
Automatic duplication is only supported for backups run with the Start Backup using BRM (
STRBKUBRM
) command, it is not supported for backups run with theSAVxxxBRM
commands or the Start Archive using BRM (STRARCBRM
) command. If a control group is set up to do an IPL after it completes, the automatic duplication job(s) will not be submitted.Â
DUPMEDBRM VOL(*SEARCH)
 orÂDUPMEDBRM VOL(*SCHHST)
will need to be run to duplicate any media or saved items marked for duplication after the system has been IPL'd.When using automatic duplication, it is recommended that 'Mark volume for duplication' and 'Mark history for duplication' be set to *NO in the media policy. If one or both of these are set to *YES, the 'Mark volume for duplication' is cleared once the auto duplication has completed. If 'Mark history for duplication' is set to '*YES', then it is expected that you intend to perform a second duplication in addition to the auto duplication, and a
DUPMEDBRM *SCHHST
will need to be run. When using automatic duplication, a batch job for each media set from the save is submitted and runs
DUPMEDBRM VOL(*LIST)
using theFROMSEQNBR('startingseq#' 'endingseq#')
from the control group save. It is not necessary to mark media or history for duplication in the media policy. When doing parallel saves that use multiple logical or physical tape media libraries, the automatic duplication function may not work unless each logical library has multiple compatible drives available.
If different media policies are used for full and incremental backups, when both media policies mark media for duplication and either media policy is set up to do automatic duplications, BRMS will submit a duplication whether a full or incremental backup is run.
Automatic duplication does not allow a sequence number to be specified for the To device. By default, the sequence number for the To device is 1 which will cause a new volume to be used for each volume set being duplicated. It may be desirable for each of the volume sets being copied to be appended to the output volume on the To device. If wanting to duplicate many to one, the subsystem where the submitted jobs are sent to should have a maximum active set to 1. The following command can be used to force the copied input volumes to be appended to the volume on the To device:
   CHGCMDDFT CMD(DUPMEDBRM) NEWDFT('TOSEQNBR(*END)')
