Media Expiration

Tips to work with and manage volume expiration in BRMS

BRMS media can be expired in numerous ways. BRMS media will be expired when

  • Expiration date is reached and the volume is at a location that allows volumes to expire and one of the following occurs:
    • STREXPBRM
    • STRMNTBRM with EXPMED(*YES) is specified
    • WRKMEDBRM Option 7 is used
    • Expiration date is changed to current or past date
  • Number of versions is reached and one of the following occurs:
    • STRMNTBRM with EXPMED(*YES) is specified
    • WRKMEDBRM Option 7 is used

NOTES :

  1. In IBM i 7.1 and later, media that has been marked for duplication but has not been duplicated will not be eligible for expiration.  Once the media has been duplicated it will be eligible for expiration.
  2. If a volume doesn't have history and it is not in a media set that is active, it will be expired when STRMNTBRM  EXPMED(*YES) EXPSETMED(*NO) is run.
  3. If a volume doesn't have history and it is in an active media set and STRMNTBRM EXPMED(*YES) EXPSETMED(*YES),  BRMS will expire these volumes and may break the existing set into multiple sets to free up volumes for use.
