Fast Media Positioning on Restore
In releases IBM i 7.1 and later, IBM i native restore commands were enhanced with the ability to do fast media positioning when restoring specific objects from save media. Support for this function is enabled within BRMS by default only if object level detail exists.
Using Fast Media Positioning Considerations
Object level detail must be specified on the backup.
The POSITION() parameter may improve restore performance depending on where the objects being restored are located in the media file.
Considerations for IFS
Restores of individual files with WRKMEDIBRM Option 9, 9, 9, 7, 1 will use the POSITION() parameter.
Restores of individual files with WRKMEDIBRM Option 9, 9, 9, 7, 7 will use POSITION(*FIRST) as this option prompts the RST command which allows changes to the object parameter. This processing does not return control to BRMS to reflect the correct POSITION() parameter if the object parameter is changed.
Restores of a directory with WRKMEDIBRM Option 9,7 will not use the POSITION() parameter.
RSTBRM of a directory or file will use the POSITION() parameter.
