When using BRMS to restore individual library objects or IFS files, object level detail is required to be kept when the save is done.

  • SAVLIBBRM OBJDTL(*YES)

  • In a backup control group:

However , it is also possible to restore individual objects or files if object level detail was not saved or has being removed by normal BRMS maintenance.

If object level detail exists for objects or files, one of these methods can be used to restore :

  • Restore Object using BRM (RSTOBJBRM) for individual objects

  • Restore Object using BRM (RSTBRM) for individual IFS files.

  • Library Objects - Work with Media Information (WRKMEDIBRM)

    • Option 9 - Work with saved objects

    • Option 7 - Restore object

  • IFS Files - Work with Media Information (WRKMEDIBRM)

    • Option 9 - Work with saved objects

    • Option 9 - Work with directory information

    • Option 9 - Work with objects

    • Option 7 - Restore

  • WRKOBJBRM(Library objects)

  • WRKLNKBRM(IFS files)

  • GO BRMS

    • Option 4 -  Recovery

    • Option 2 - Perform recovery

      • 6 - Work with saved objects 

      • 9 - Work with saved link information

  • Use native RSTOBJ or RST commands

  • In IBM i 7.2 and later,

     or it's superseding PTF is applied, performance will be improved for objects part of a large library.

Object Level Detail Does Not Exist

If object level detail was not saved or has being removed, one of the following methods can be used

  • Use native RSTOBJ or RST commands

    • Requires media definitions if saves are done in parallel

  • Library Objects - Work with Media Information (WRKMEDIBRM) for the library you want to restore the specified object(s)

    • Option 7 - Restore

    • Option 7 - Specify object

    • Specify the name of the object(s) you want restored

  • IFS files - Work with Media Information (WRKMEDIBRM) for the *LINK item you want to restore the specified file(s)

    • Option 7 - Restore

    • Option 7 - Specify object

    • Specify the file(s) you want to restore (multiple files can be specified)

NOTE: it is possible to submit restores to batch from the WRKMEDIBRMmenu

  • Object  Level Detail Exists

    • After selecting the first Option 9 to specify an object, and the objects are selected using option 7

    • Select F14 - Submit to batch rather than enter

  • No Object Level Detail

    • After selecting option 7, 7, use F14 rather than enter to submit the restore to batch
